Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a blinding disorder that affects newborn who are born preterm. The immature retina of the newborn develops abnormal blood vessels that proliferates and causes retinal detachment. Early detection within one month of birth, and treatment with lasers or injections can prevent this permanent blindness. At MGM Eye Institute, Raipur, we are committed to provide exceptional care for premature infants at risk of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).
Our specialized ROP program is backed by cut t ing-edge infrastructure, highly trained professionals, and a multidisciplinary approach that ensures the best outcomes for our tiny patients. In order to manage the barriers to access to ROP screening, MGMEI has extended its ROP services to all parts of Raipur district and to the neighboring districts as well. Currently, we are covering 12 NICUs with ROP care.
Our team of experienced vitreoretinal surgeons, anesthesiologist, fellows, and paramedical staff work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care for ROP. Our specialists are trained in the latest treatment modalities, including laser therapy, intravitreal injections, and advanced vitreoretinal surgical techniques whenever needed.
We use the Retcam Shuttle to capture high resolution digital images of the retina of premature babies, facilitating excellent document and education of the parents.

Since inception of this program in January 2016, we have screened 12,406 premature babies for ROP and 5631 (45.8%) babies were found to have the disease of ROP. (Updated till July 2024)

ROP care does not stop at screening and treatment of preterm babies. Most of these infants develop refractive errors and need glasses. We ensure long-term follow up for these infants to make sure that their visual rehabilitation is taken care of by our expert pediatric ophthalmologist.
