The Contact Lens Service was established when the Institute started its service in 2004. Contact lenses are optical devices, which can replace glasses, and enhance vision. While soft contact lenses are commonly dispensed by all ophthalmologists, and optometrists, specialised contact lenses like rigid gas permeable contact lenses require special training.
The Institute has developed optometrists in this regard, and the comanagement with ophthalmologists has advanced the department. At present, besides the general soft contact lenses, the department specialises in rigid gas permeable contact lenses, keratoconus special lenses Rose K lens, prosthetic contact lenses, toric soft contact lenses, and multifocal contact lenses.
Recently it has started dispensing scleral contact lenses. The services of the department has helped in the treatment of refractive errors, anisometropia, aphakia, corneal scars and keratoconus.
