Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the world and the most common cause of irreversible blindness. Various prevalence studies have estimated 60.5 million people with open angle and angle closure glaucoma by 2010 which will be 79.6 million by 2020.

Glaucoma is the “silent sneak of sight” .It includes a large group of disorders where raised intraocular pressure is the main risk factor which then affects the optic nerve and thereby causes visual loss in a slow insidious manner. Therefore early detection with a high index of suspicion can be of value to prevent visual loss.

Glaucoma department pioneered the use of glaucoma valve surgery in the state. This surgery is useful in those patients, where medicines, and surgeries fail to lower the intraocular pressure. The department is equipped with the latest diagnostic and imaging devices used in the management of glaucoma like Humphreys visual field analyser, and optical coherence tomography. It is one of the few centers in central India to manage childhood glaucoma, which is very challenging.
