When a patients vision cannot be restored to normal despite all treatment, the use of low vision devices can optimize the vision, and improve patient functionality. The low vision services at MGMEI was the first such department in entire central India.
It treats patients with all types of eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration, ocular albinism, glaucoma, etc. The purpose is not curative, but to enhance the available vision that the patient has with aids like hand and stand magnifiers, telescopes, etc.
The department also provides non-optical devices, and guides the family of patients to modify their homes which would be suitable for someone whose vision is low. This enhances the quality of life, and makes the patient independent. Like, an elderly retired patient can read newspapers, or books, to pass time. A child can study in a normal school.
The low vision department has a positive impact on the patient. Several patients have benefited from using the services of this department.
