This is one department which deals with a variety of diseases, and surgeries, much more than any other field in ophthalmology. The department was one of the four with which the Institute started in 2004. Over the years, it has gained a wide reputation in the state and surrounding region.
The service has been dealing with diseases of the lacrimal system, orbit, eye lids and eye cancers.Over the years it has been instrumental in saving many eyes and lives in children and adults.
The department has successfully done complex surgeries, which have been instrumental in giving functional and cosmetic improvement in numerous patients. One of the pioneering work was the development of custom made ocular prostheses which are used for the cosmetic improvement of disfigured eye.
In this customised molds of the eye socket is taken after removing the disfigured eye and restoring cosmetic appearance by creating an acrylic shell and painting it similar to the other eye. Such cosmetic restoration enhanced the confidence of the patient and had a positive effect on the quality of the eye. The department also pioneered the use of laser and endoscope based lacrimal surgery in this region.
