Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the world and the most common cause of irreversible blindness. Various prevalence studies have estimated 60.5 million people with open angle and angle closure glaucoma by 2010 which will be 79.6 million by 2020.
Glaucoma is the “silent sneak of sight” .It includes a large group of disorders where raised intraocular pressure is the main risk factor which then affects the optic nerve and thereby causes visual loss in a slow insidious manner. Therefore early detection with a high index of suspicion can be of value to prevent visual loss.
The glaucoma services are geared up to combat the various types of glaucoma with congenital glaucoma, primary glaucoma ,secondary glaucoma and various other refractory glaucomas which are usually very resistant to treatment.
The comprehensive eye check up with a thorough history taking, slit lamp examination, IOP by a well calibrated applanation tonometer, gonioscopy with the help of a indentation gonioscope and a dilated fundus examination with the help a+90 D,+78D,+60D facilitates a detailed glaucoma evaluation.
